Italy’s Salini Costruttori has been awarded the €3.35bn contract to build the 5250MW Millennium hydroelectric project on the Blue Nile in Ethiopia, Africa’s largest hydropower complex.
“The award is a great technical and engineering achievement that confirms Salini’s leadership among the big players in global hydropower construction” said Pietro Salini, Managing Director of Salini Costruttori.
The project, which the government will implement through the Ethiopian Electric Power Corp, is located around 700km northwest of Addis Ababa, in the Beishangul-Gumaz National Regional State.
Cosntruction work will include a roller-compacted concrete main dam, with two powerhouses to be installed at the toe of the dam, accommodating 10 and five Francis turbine units, respectively. The dam will also have a concrete-lined gated spillway and a 5km long, 50m high saddle dam – both on the left bank.
It is expected that the dam will start delivering power in September 2014.
